The Tanzania Development Vision 2025 envisions using digital technologies or Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) to facilitate sustainable socio-economic development.
Furthermore, Tanzania Digital Health Strategy 2019-2024 strives to foster digital health
transformation, strengthening capacities, public-private partnerships, research and innovations
to promote the adoption of appropriate digital health interventions to address health systems
challenges
The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is Tanzania's oldest and largest
health sciences university, ranked 1st in Tanzania, 3rd in Sub-Saharan Africa, 5th in Africa and
among the top 500 universities worldwide, per the Times Higher Education Magazine in 2023.
MUHAS has memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with universities and organisations worldwide.
Specifically, on digital health and innovations, we have MOUs with different institutions including Mälardalens
University (MDU) in Sweden, and LM International (LMI), the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) in Germany, the
Ministry of Health Zanzibar, Ministry of Health Tanzania,eGovernment Authority in Tanzania
To drive forward the digital health transformation journey in Tanzania, a multistakeholder
partnership alliance coordinated by MUHAS in collaboration with the leadership of the Ministry of
Health (MOH), the Ministry of Health Zanzibar (MOHZ), and the President’s Office Regional
Administration and Local Government (PORALG), LMI, MDU in Sweden, eGAand other partners.
The objectives of the alliance are to support the implementation of the Tanzania and Zanzibar
Digital Health Strategies1,2 and to provide a case study for other African countries on how the
digital transformation can be achieved.

MUHAS, as many of you might be aware, stands tall as a premier higher-learning public institution in Tanzania, dedicated not just to health and allied training but also to ground-breaking research, insightful consultancy, and unwavering public service.
Our dedication to knowledge enhancement, technology adaptation in learning, and higher education training for health professionals has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, the Times Higher Education Magazine has bestowed upon us accolades that we proudly share with you: MUHAS ranks 1st in Tanzania, 3rd in Sub-Saharan Africa, 5th across the vast continent of Africa, and is featured among the top 500 universities globally. These recognitions are a testament to our commitment to excellence in every endeavour we undertake.
However, our journey continues. We've forged strong partnerships, inking Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with a diverse set of esteemed universities and organisations worldwide. It is with this spirit of collaboration that MUHAS heads a remarkable consortium. This collective comprises key digital health and innovation figures and institutions, including the Tanzania and Zanzibar Ministries of Health, the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG), eGovernment Authority, LM International (LMI), Mälardalen University (MDU), Tanzania Health Informatics Association (TAHIA), and several other instrumental partners.
This innovation consortium is charting the path for digital health transformation initiatives. The 3rd MUHAS Digital Health and Innovation Week 2023 is at the forefront of these initiatives, seamlessly paired with the 3rd Tanzania Digital Health and Innovation Forum and Exhibition 2023.
Our joint goal is clear and resounding: to bolster digital health research and innovations, ensuring that the most fitting, affordable, and advanced digital health solutions and services find their way to addressing the health systems' challenges that many face today.
